Wankar gate is located in the northern sector of Murchison Falls National Park, in the northwestern part of Uganda. Traveling to the park takes you through Nwoya district, before reaching the gate.

Wankar gate is strategically situated at the ranger post in an area known to be a famous habitat for African giant elephants, so the area is a target for the ivory seeking poachers. A ranger post was built to pacify the Tangi valley in the Wankar section of Murchison Falls National Park. This was also to intensify the fight against illegal activities, particularly elephant poaching in the neighboring Tangi valley and at the top of the falls area.

The post was constructed to strengthen Uganda Wildlife Authority’s law enforcement efforts in Wankar sector. Here, the poaching levels had reached alarming proportions due to its remoteness.
