Buliisa Village is named after its main town Buliisa, where the district headquarters are located. The village is located in western Uganda, bordered by Nebbi district to the northwest, Nwoya to the northeast, Masindi to the east, Hoima to the south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, across Lake Albert, to the west.
Buliisa village is found within the greater Bunyoro kingdom, which is comprised of six districts, that is, Hoima, Masindi, Kibaale, Buliisa, and Kiryandongo. It takes about 5-hour drive from Kampala to Buliisa Village via Hoima district, that is approximately 307 kilometers. The nearest airfield is Bugungu airstrip which takes approximately 30 minutes to Buliisa Village.
The oil so far discovered around Buliisa is about 6.5 billion barrels of oil resources in 40% of the explored area. This is in the Albertine graben and estimates suggest that the multi-billion field will be the largest onshore field in sub-Saharan Africa, thus making the area a must-visit.
Tourist attractions and activities around Buliisa village
Buliisa is endowed with a plateful of tourist attractions that can make tourists busy for a while during their vacation in or around the village.
The adventure surrounding Buliisa is enormous. Murchison Falls National Park is the top tourist attraction that surrounds Buliisa. The Park comprises of many tourist activities, including safari game drives, boat cruise along the Nile, hiking to the top of the fall, nature walk, bird watching, sightseeing, and community visits among others.
Lake Albert makes one of the top attractions within Buliisa, which is approximately 60 km from the village. The Lake has offers activities which can be carried out, including fishing, swimming, sightseeing, and boat rides among other activities. The local people mostly catch silverfish and Tilapia as well as sprat – locally known as “Enkejje”.
Budongo forest is quite also a big attraction around Buliisa village. The forest receives a big number of visitors from different parts of the world, making it a must-visit while on your vacation to the Village.
Budongo forest is the largest surviving natural forest in Uganda which sits atop the Albertine Rift, part of the Great Rift Valley. The forest is located within the boundaries of Murchison Falls National Park. As a result, visitors who visit Budongo forest can engage in different activities such as chimpanzee trekking, nature walks, bird watching, and community visits among others.
Salt mining in Kibiro garden is an amazing and adventurous activity one can also experience while on vacation in Buliisa village.
Visiting the Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is one of the most scenic wonders surrounding the Village. The wildlife reserve comprises of a variety of wildlife animals and bird species among other attractions.
Other tourist attractions and activities
The Buliisa Escarpment and hot springs are also among the attractions within the rift valley of Lake Albert basin. The area offers a good opportunity to view effects and features of faulting, including the western rift valley.
Butyaba Port is located southwest of Buliisa village on Lake Albert. The Port lies in the western rift valley, below the Biiso escarpment. Other attractions around Buliisa include the Bugungu and Karuma Wildlife Reserves among others.
Murchison Falls is indeed Uganda’s most spectacular wildlife park in Uganda. However, guests that want to track mountain gorillas in Uganda would be highly recommended to visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Golden monkey trekking in Uganda is only done in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
